Tips and tricks: Saving money on petrol

Fuel apps and websites use up-to-date information so you can find the cheapest petrol on that day. To get started, you just type in your postcode or suburb. You can also choose the type of fuel you need (like E10) to see exactly what it costs in your area.

Most fuel apps let you:

• View a map or list to compare fuel prices at petrol stations near you.
• Keep track of price cycles so you can check when prices are going up or down, so you can fill your tank when fuel is at its cheapest.
• Save your favourites to save your petrol stations and the fuel type you use the most.

Fuel Check is the NSW Government fuel price app and website.

The Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) shows you the highest and lowest fuel prices.

FuelCheck TAS  is the Tasmanian Government’s fuel price app and website.

MyFuelNT is the Northern Territory Government’s fuel price app.

FuelWatch is the Western Australian Government’s fuel price website.

Queensland’s Department of Energy and Public Works website has a list of fuel price apps and website. Please note that the Queensland Government is not connected to any of the apps or website on the list.

The Consumer and Business Services website has a list of fuel rice apps and websites.

The NSW Government’s Fuel Check app also compares prices across the ACT.

• Use official app stores: Only download apps from the official Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
• Check app permissions: A fuel app will ask to use your location so it can find petrol stations near you. You might want to choose to share permissions to know your location ‘while in use’ instead of ‘all the time’.
• Read the privacy info: Always check the privacy policy to see what information the app is collecting about you.
