Where can you find AI now? Artificial intelligence, or AI for short, is all around us and has been for many years. You may have used it without knowing it. Some common examples of AI are if you have a smartphone that you open by holding the phone up to your face and the phone recognises you. When you call a large organisation, you may go through an automated phone system before speaking to a real person.
Some websites use AI to answer your questions. You type a question into a box, and AI will try and give you an answer. These are called chatbots. They can save you time when searching for help. Some websites even give their chatbot a name to make it seem like you’re talking to a person. Even when you watch TV, you will get recommendations for other shows that you may like based on your past viewing history. Social media and the apps you use on your phone like Siri or Alexa and the fun ones like filters on your camera app.
AI learns from information that is fed to it, that is from us or from the people who make the apps. When you watch a movie or a TV show, the AI for that app remembers your choice, all your viewing choices. After this, the AI learns what you like and will make suggestions based on what it has learned from you. The more you use it, the more it learns.
And then there are social media apps like Facebook. Facebook uses AI to suggest people you may know from the millions of users or recommend posts based on your interests and habits. What you see will be different from what everybody else sees. You are probably already using or have used AI. It’s all around us. It is a tool that can help make your life a little bit easier.
