Session Plan: Working with effective AI prompts

Use this session plan to support your learners with writing effective AI prompts.

Use this session plan to support your learners with writing effective AI prompts. This session can be delivered one on one or in a group, and will take about 60 minutes to complete.

“Prompting” just means asking AI to do something. There are ways you can write these prompts that improve results.

At the end of the session, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between searching online and an AI prompt.
  • Apply a simple framework (Role, Task, Context) to a prompt.
  • Learn how to improve AI’s response

Before you start this session, choose an AI app that your learners can use for free on their own device eg ChatGPT, Google Gemini or Microsoft Copilot. Then, ask everyone to follow along and practice the steps of asking AI to do things through the session.

Top Tip: Test out the prompting activity on the AI app yourself first, so you know what to expect. Take note of any tips you could share to make it easier for everyone to follow along.

This learning activity can be supported by our article on creating prompts. Print it out to give to your learners, or show them where they can find this information later.
